THE LEAGUE AND THE NEBRASKA LEGISLATURE

The League Takes Action Each Legislative Session

Before each legislative session, members of the LWVNE state board of directors review bills to identify areas of interest to League members and legislation that would impact League program issues. After directors present key bills in their areas of expertise to the LWVNE state board, members vote to identify legislative priority bills for each session. State issue directors and the co-presidents testify to legislative committees to share studies and the positions of the League. Members also attend an annual Legislative Day to learn more about the League’s priority bills and then fan out to meet their legislators to advocate the League position. Members from all our local Leagues across the state are motivated to participate in legislative activity.

The Basis for Legislative Positions

The LWV does not take a position on an issue without careful study. Studies take place on the local, state and national levels. One reason for the political effectiveness of the League is its reputation for thorough study. The League studies the facts and takes into consideration the pros and cons of an issue. During its studies, the League draws upon a variety of resources from all points of view including expert opinion, statements by public officials, observation of facilities and institutions, community opinion, public meetings, surveys and media coverage. The League takes action on selected governmental issues based on a firm foundation of careful study. The League has program positions on its legislative priorities at the local, state and national levels.
