Since the Nebraska Legislature convened on Jan. 8, action teams affiliated with the League of Women Voters of Nebraska have provided position statements in support of or opposition to 43 legislative bills or legislative resolutions/constitutional amendments through April 8.

The LWVNE also provided input opposing three proposed rules changes, none of which advanced, and delivered a letter about the history of the League and its longtime work in policy areas to the offices of state senators during its Legislative Day on Feb. 13.

You can read each letter from the advocacy summary that has been updated throughout the 109th session of the Nebraska Legislature by Dianne Bystrom, LWVNE director of communications. You can follow legislation by subscribing to the LWVNE’s action alerts — prepared by Rachel Gibson, action vice president — here.

The LWVNE board includes directors in six policy areas – disability and behavioral health, education policy, government, health policy, natural resources and energy and social policy. Each policy area director can form action teams to carry out their duties, particularly during the legislative sessions. For the 2025 legislative session, 43 LWVNE members – including the policy area directors – serve on these six action teams.

The LWVNE’s action teams have provided position statements supporting 23 bills and four legislative resolutions/constitutional amendments and opposing 12 bills and three legislative resolutions/constitutional amendments. They submitted a neutral position on LR22CA, a constitutional amendment to provide the right to a clean and healthy natural environment due to concerns about its economic impact, legal ambiguities and potential for increased regulatory burdens.

Of the 44 position statements – 36 bills, seven legislative resolutions/constitutional amendments and the proposed rules changes – 34 were submitted via the Legislature’s online platform, and LWVNE members testified in person before legislative committees on seven bills and three legislative resolutions/constitutional amendments. Sheri St Clair, co-director of government, and Mary Kelly, a member of the disability and behavioral health action team, provided the in-person testimony.
