League Mourns Loss of Dr. Deborah Turner

Dr. Deborah Turner, 20th President of the LWVUS

With profound sadness, the League of Women Voters of Nebraska mourns the loss of Dr. Deborah Ann Turner – the League’s national president since 2020 and a member of the LWV of Greater Omaha from 2016 to 2022 – who died Jan. 28 from complications from a pulmonary embolism.

A fearless advocate for voting rights and women’s rights, Turner devoted her life’s work to influencing meaningful changes in the lives of voters across the nation. As the 20th president of the 104-year-old voting rights organization, Turner played a pivotal role in fighting for a more fair and representative Union while uplifting racial equity in the League’s mission work.

“Dr. Turner was such a vibrant personality,” said MaryLee Moulton, co-president of the LWVNE. “I attended a rally for reproductive rights in Omaha where she was the primary speaker, and her infectious energy lifted the crowd. Every month she led our national leadership call, and she was always positive, even when the news was not so positive,” she said.

To celebrate Turner’s life, a visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, in the Campanile Room at Iowa State University’s Memorial Union, 2229 Lincoln Way, Ames, IA., from 4-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be Sunday, Feb. 4, in the Great Hall of ISU’s Memorial Union with doors opening at 10 a.m. and the program beginning at 11 a.m.
