Governor Signs Budget, Prison Compromise Included

Picture of exterior view of the Nebraska state capitol

No veto of prison compromise. The state will wait for a study by the Criminal Justice Institute before making a final decision on building a new prison.

The LWVNE opposes building a new prison before other propositions to reduce the population are fully considered and a report by the Criminal Justice Institute is finished.  While $100 million was set aside in a legislative fund, no appropriation for the prison was adopted. The Nebraska Legislature allocated $15 million to prison overcrowding solutions.
